I can assure you that is a screenshot of a real payback calculation for a customer that upgraded their warehouse to high-efficiency lighting. You are probably trying to figure out how something can have more incentives available than the cost to purchase the product right?

Tax Incentives

The customer from the above image was able to get their industrial lighting upgrade paid entirely through tax rebates and incentives. You read that right, you may be able to get paid to upgrade your lighting. A recently announced doubling of the Energizing Indiana Commercial and Industrial (C&I) Prescriptive Rebate Program has driven many companies to finally make the jump to upgrading their current halide or T12 lighting.

There is always a catch to something so good right? Yes, but it is a small one. You need to have the entire project (installed and rebates applied for) prior to November 30th, 2013.

Why would I Upgrade my Lighting?

While it should be obvious why now is the time to upgrade your lighting how do you know you need them? At a basic level if your manufacturing facility or distribution center still has metal halide lights (the yellow looking ones that take forever to heat up) or T12 (thick tube lights) then you need new lights.

Benefits of Upgraded Lighting

There are many benefits of upgrading to high-efficiency lighting. They include;

  • Cost savings – The most important and direct savings is a reduction in the wattage used by your lighting. Depending on your current lighting and the new lights you choose, most of our customers see a 45% to 80% savings in energy consumption. This amounts to direct savings every month on your electric bill.

  • Maintenance savings – High efficient lighting products require no maintenance for up to 10 years or 100,000 hours of use. With no need to have an internal staff or outside contractors changing lamps or ballasts you can see how this is a big benefit of upgrading your lights.
  • Replacement lamp cost – Most of our current customers replace 10%-15% of their current lamps and 5% of their ballast on a yearly basis. With tubular bulbs costing $2.50 each and halide lamps running $35 each for a 1,000 watt version you can see how eliminating these costs for up to 10 years can save significant expenses
  • HVAC reduction – High efficient lighting emits much less heat than its older counterparts. The lowest difference in surface temperature of an old lamp and a high efficient one is 500 degrees.  This means less energy will be used to cool your facility. Even if you don’t have an air-conditioned or air-cooled facility the lower temperature of the workplace means a more comfortable and productive workforce.
  • Improved light quality – Dimly lit workplaces can cause accidents, errors and bring down morale. A lighting upgrade will improve your facilities appearance to customers and employees while providing a cleaner and brighter environment, even at lower wattages.
  • Environmentally friendly – High efficient lighting contains a lower level of harmful chemicals and depending on the model chosen can be sustainable and recyclable.

Can I Upgrade Myself?

While it is possible to perform a lighting upgrade on your own, it isn’t recommended. In the same way that you are experts in your field, bringing in lighting experts gives your project the best chance of success with no hiccups. FlexPAC has a lighting division called Flex Green that has extensive experience in performing lighting upgrades. In addition, ensuring federal and local tax rebates and incentives are applied for properly is an invaluable part of what Flex Green brings to the table.
