Going into my fall semester of my junior year, I realized that if I wanted to go into the field of graphic design I would need to build my portfolio for future job/grad school applications. I was excited to start applying for internships as my previous jobs were not related in any way to my career goals. After going to hiring event at Butler, where I attend school, I met Julie and Dylan.
One month later, I accepted my offer letter and I started work in January. Honestly, I didn’t really know what to expect for the first day. Part of me felt that I might be treated like the stereotypical intern with Julie having me go get her coffee or do all the work that’s intern-like such as filing papers. Instead, on the first day, I was given tutorials on how to use Illustrator. At the time, I was only familiar Adobe Photoshop, and within a few days, she had me working on projects. With her guidance, I was amazed at how fast I learned Illustrator, and I now use it in all of my projects in school.
Of course, coming into this internship I thought that I wouldn’t need to learn new software, and I’d be able to fly through projects, I realized that this internship isn’t just about graphic design. I’ve also had projects where I dealt with video editing and animations, which is great because it forced me to refresh myself on previously used software, and it also opened me up to new design techniques. Now, every day that I come to work, I get excited to see what tasks I will be doing. Not only does the day fly by, but I also because I get college credit doing what I love to do (and not get coffee for people).
Working alongside Julie was an education. Anytime that I became stuck or need advice on a design, she was always willing to help guide me to make the design even better. I would even hazard a guess and say that I’ve learned more from her in the last 6 weeks than any other class I’ve taken.
As for the company of FlexPAC itself, everyone was great and supportive. I know that if I had to walk down the hallway and ask someone for help, or just have someone to talk to, everyone would treat me equally. I feel like an important asset to FlexPAC. I love interning here, and if I had the chance to continue this internship past May, I would accept right away. This is a place that I enjoy coming to, and I know that everything I learn here will help build my portfolio, preparing me for wherever my career as a designer leads.
